Vietnam vs India for Software Engineers 2026: Salaries, Talent, and When to Choose

India has over 4.3 million software engineers - the second-largest tech workforce in the world - and produces 1.5 million engineering graduates a year. Vietnam has around 550,000 IT professionals and graduates 55,000–60,000 per year. And yet Vietnam is Japan's dominant outsourcing partner, produced six unicorns, and consistently beats India on cost-per-hire for mid-level roles across Southeast Asia and Europe.

These two countries are not competing for the same contracts. They are different bets with different risk profiles, talent shapes, and reasons companies choose one over the other. Here is what those differences actually are.

Salaries in 2026

Vietnam has moved significantly in the last three years. The "cheap Vietnam developer" narrative is outdated at the senior level.

  • Junior (0-2 yrs): $8,000 - $15,000/yr local
  • Mid-level (2-5 yrs): $15,000 - $30,000/yr local
  • Senior (5+ yrs): $30,000 - $55,000/yr local
  • Remote (USD-paid): $40,000 - $70,000/yr, with ML specialists pushing past $80,000

India has a sharp split between the service company tier and the product/startup tier.

  • Service companies (TCS, Wipro, Cognizant): ₹3.5 - 12 LPA ($4,200 - $14,400) for 0-4 years
  • Product companies and unicorns: ₹18 - 80 LPA ($21,600 - $96,000) for mid to senior roles
  • Remote (USD-paid): $40,000 - $80,000/yr for strong profiles

At the local market level, Vietnam pays more in USD terms for equivalent experience because the talent pool is smaller and foreign demand has driven rates up. At the top tier, India's best engineers earn more - the pool of FAANG-adjacent talent simply does not exist in Vietnam yet.

Talent Pool: Size vs Depth

India's pool is massive and stratified. You can find engineers at every experience level and every technology niche - embedded systems, ML infrastructure, mobile, DevOps, data engineering. The downside: quality variance is enormous. A "senior software engineer" in India can mean anything from genuine system design depth to someone who has held a senior title at a low-bar service company. Technical screening is non-negotiable.

Vietnam's pool is smaller but more consistent at the mid-tier. Less of the extreme low end, less of the ultra-specialist depth. Vietnam ranks among UNESCO's top 10 countries by number of engineers produced, and 78% of the population is under 35. The developer workforce is young, aggressive about upskilling, and shaped by 15+ years of Japanese outsourcing culture - which shows up as attention to process, documentation, and delivery quality.

Tech Stacks

Vietnam: React, Vue, Angular (frontend - strong), Node.js, Java Spring Boot, .NET, PHP Laravel (backend - very strong), React Native, Flutter (mobile - solid), Docker and Kubernetes (growing depth in HCMC). Senior ML engineers are scarce.

India: Java, Python, Go, .NET (backend - very deep, decades of enterprise experience), React and Angular (frontend - strong), Android/Kotlin, React Native (mobile - strong), AWS/Azure/GCP with strong SRE culture, Spark/Kafka/Databricks (data engineering - very mature). Bangalore alone has an estimated 600,000 AI and ML professionals.

If you need ML infrastructure, data platforms, or large-scale distributed systems, India has the depth. For solid full-stack product engineers on a web or mobile app, Vietnam is competitive and often cheaper.

English Proficiency

India uses English as a de facto official language across education, government, and business. Most engineers are educated in English-medium institutions. Communication overhead with US and UK clients is low.

Vietnam's English is a second language. Gen Z engineers entering the market in the last five years are meaningfully better than their predecessors, but senior engineers at companies with foreign clients typically have B2-level English - workable but not effortless. Written English (Slack, docs, PRs) tends to be stronger than spoken. Budget for more structured async communication if building a Vietnam team - more written specs, clearer tickets, more async handoffs.

Cost of Living

Ho Chi Minh City: 1-bedroom (central) $400-700/month, street food $1-3, all-in monthly budget $800-$1,400.

Bangalore: 1-bedroom (tech corridor) ₹15,000-35,000/month ($180-420), local meal ₹60-150, all-in monthly budget ₹30,000-70,000 ($360-840).

Raw purchasing power is higher in Bangalore. But Bangalore's traffic is severe - 1.5-2 hour commutes each way are normal in the major IT corridors. Hyderabad consistently ranks better: lower rents, better infrastructure, shorter commutes, same major employers.

Time Zones

Client locationIndia overlapVietnam overlap
US East Coast9.5h behind - limited morning ET11h behind - minimal
US West Coast12.5h behind - almost none14h behind - almost none
UK/Germany4.5-5.5h ahead - solid morning overlap6-7h ahead - limited
Japan/Korea3.5h behind - excellent2h behind - excellent
Australia (AEST)4.5h behind - excellent3h behind - excellent

For US companies, both are difficult for real-time collaboration - India has a 30-year head start building async workflows around this constraint. For European companies, India is the stronger timezone fit. For Japanese, Korean, and Australian companies, Vietnam is better: Ho Chi Minh City is only 2 hours behind Tokyo, which is why Vietnam is Japan's dominant outsourcing destination.

Work Culture

India has a hierarchy-respecting culture in enterprise settings. Senior developers lead, juniors execute, escalation paths are formal. Startup culture in Bangalore has shifted this significantly, but in service companies expect clear seniority structures. Attrition peaked at 25%+ during the 2021-2022 hiring surge but has fallen sharply - IT sector attrition hit 16.2% in early 2026, the lowest in five years. The risk is lower than it was, but poaching between employers is still common at senior levels.

Vietnam has a relationship-first work culture shaped by Japanese outsourcing norms: emphasis on process, delivery, and long-term client relationships. Turnover is lower (15-20%). Junior-to-mid Vietnamese developers sometimes flag issues less proactively than their Western counterparts - teams that build explicit feedback channels get better results than those that assume problems surface automatically.

Startup Ecosystem

India: 131 unicorns as of June 2026 (third globally after the US and China), with 53 headquartered in Bangalore. Deep FAANG presence: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Meta all run large engineering centers in Bangalore and Hyderabad. The IIT-to-startup pipeline is strong. Widest range of career tracks: FAANG roles, startup founding, product management, pre-IPO equity.

Vietnam: Six unicorns: VNG, MoMo, Sky Mavis, VNPAY, VNLIFE, and Tiki. The digital economy reached $72B in 2025, contributing 14% of GDP. Government initiatives actively fund AI, semiconductors, and green tech. Engineers joining now are in early-mover territory. The ceiling on local career progression is lower than Bangalore's - remote work for foreign companies is the financially superior path for senior Vietnamese engineers.

Visas

Working in Vietnam: Vietnam's 90-day e-visa ($50, multiple entry) covers most remote workers paid by foreign employers. No official digital nomad visa exists as of June 2026. Doing paid work on a tourist-category visa is technically unauthorized employment. For formal employment at a Vietnamese company, a work permit takes 4-6 weeks.

Working in India: India's Employment (E) Visa requires employer sponsorship and a minimum annual salary of INR 16.25 LPA ($19,500). No digital nomad visa. Remote freelancers earning from foreign clients face the same gray area as Vietnam.

When to Choose Each

Choose India when:

  • You need scale quickly - hundreds of engineers across multiple specializations
  • Your work is enterprise Java, data engineering, large-scale distributed systems, or ML infrastructure
  • You have English-first async processes and strong technical interview pipelines
  • You are targeting US or European markets

Choose Vietnam when:

  • You need 10-50 engineers at consistent mid-tier quality
  • Your client base is in Japan, Korea, Australia, or Southeast Asia
  • You prioritize lower attrition and longer team tenure
  • Your primary needs are full-stack web/mobile development or DevOps

Run both when:

  • You are scaling across APAC and want timezone diversity
  • Your engineering org is large enough to manage two delivery centers

For Engineers

Vietnamese engineers: The top career path in 2026 is build strong English, target remote roles at foreign companies, and use the local cost-of-living advantage to save at a rate impossible in San Francisco. The salary gap between local and remote pay for the same skills is 2-3x.

Indian engineers: The clearest wealth-creation path is still FAANG or unicorn-tier product company in Bangalore or Hyderabad, then choose between staying in India at ₹50-100+ LPA, relocating internationally, or founding with accumulated savings and network. Note: engineers in Whitefield commuting to Electronic City routinely spend 3 hours/day in transit. Hyderabad's infrastructure is genuinely better at negligible financial difference at senior levels. For engineers preparing to compete for these high-paying roles, mock interview practice can help sharpen technical answers, improve communication, and build confidence before the actual interview.

  • Time Zone Converter - Convert between IST (GMT+5:30), ICT (GMT+7), and any client time zone for scheduling standups across countries
  • Unix Timestamp Converter - Convert timestamps in logs and APIs to local time across distributed team time zones
  • Cron Expression Generator - Build cron schedules for pipelines running at the right local time for your team
  • Diff Checker - Compare code and config files across async PR reviews on distributed teams
  • JSON Formatter - Pretty-print API responses when debugging across systems
  • JWT Decoder - Decode JWTs without sending them to a third-party server

Conclusion

India wins on scale, depth, English fluency, and mature outsourcing infrastructure. Vietnam wins on consistency at the mid-tier, lower attrition, timezone alignment with East Asia and Australia, and total cost for teams in the 10-50 engineer range.

For engineers reading from either country: remote work changes the calculus significantly. A senior Vietnamese developer earning $50,000 from a US company in a city where $1,200/month is comfortable is in a strong financial position. A senior Indian engineer at a Bangalore unicorn with equity is in a different kind of strong position. Both are good bets - the question is which kind of career you want to build.
