Is it safe to extract a tar.gz file?

Usually, but tar trusts the paths stored inside the archive. An entry named ../../etc/cron.d/job or /etc/shadow, or a symlink that points outside the target directory with a file written through it later, can overwrite files anywhere your user can write. node-tar shipped fixes for both patterns in 2021 (CVE-2021-32804 for absolute paths with several leading slashes, CVE-2021-32803 for a directory swapped for a same-named symlink). GNU tar strips leading slashes and refuses .. by default, but many libraries and older extractors do not. This viewer flags every such entry, including the duplicate paths that the symlink trick depends on, before you run tar -x.
