Why does my STL say it is not watertight?

A watertight mesh has every edge shared by exactly two triangles, so it encloses a solid a slicer can fill. Holes leave edges used by only one triangle, parts that touch or overlap create edges shared by three or more, and flipped triangles make neighbors disagree about which side is outside. Most slicers repair small problems on import, but volume, weight and cost are only exact for a watertight model.
