About PBKDF2 Hash Generator

A PBKDF2 hash generator derives a password hash or encryption key from a password, a salt and an iteration count, the same way your backend does when it stores credentials. How many PBKDF2 iterations should I use?

The OWASP Password Storage Cheat Sheet recommends 600,000 iterations for PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256, 220,000 for PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512 and 1,400,000 for PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA1, which it marks as legacy only. OWASP's first choice is Argon2id, then scrypt; PBKDF2 is its pick when FIPS-140 compliance is required. Pick the highest count your login endpoint can afford, and store the count with each hash so you can raise it later.

Your password never leaves the browser

Hashing runs locally with the Web Crypto API. Nothing is uploaded, and only your settings (hash, iterations, key length) are remembered between visits. The password, salt and derived key are never saved.
