Most first attempts fail because a pipeline references a component that was never defined, or lists processors in an order that causes memory problems. Why does processor order matter in an OpenTelemetry Collector?

Processors run in the exact order the pipeline lists them, not in the order they are defined higher up in the file. That makes two placements load-bearing. memory_limiter belongs first, because its job is to reject data before the rest of the pipeline allocates memory for it, and a Collector without it gets OOM-killed under a traffic spike rather than shedding load. batch belongs last, because batching after filtering and enrichment means you are not paying to batch data you are about to drop. Anything that edits attributes sits in between. Getting this wrong does not produce a config error, it produces a Collector that falls over in production.
