How do I open an MSG file without Outlook?

An .msg file is one Outlook item saved in Microsoft's Compound File format, the same container as old .doc and .xls files, with each property such as the subject, sender and body in its own stream. Mac and mobile versions of Outlook cannot open it. Drop the file on this page: it is decoded in your browser, and you can read it here, save its attachments, or convert it to .eml, a plain-text format every mail client opens.

Is it safe to open a suspicious .msg file here?

The file never leaves your browser: it is parsed locally and nothing is uploaded. HTML is shown in a sandboxed frame that cannot run scripts or submit forms, a Content Security Policy blocks every network request, and remote images stay off until you load them, so tracking pixels cannot tell the sender you opened it. Attachments are saved only when you click download, and they are never opened.
