MBOX Input

Drop an .mbox file here, or click to browse. Multi-GB Google Takeout exports work: the file is read in your browser and never uploaded.

Mailbox

Open an .mbox file or paste a mailbox to list every message. Pick one to read it, save it as .eml, or export the whole index as CSV.

About MBOX Viewer

An MBOX viewer is used to open and read .mbox mail archives, such as a Gmail export from Google Takeout, without importing them into Thunderbird or Apple Mail. This one indexes multi-GB files in your browser, lists every message with its Gmail labels, renders any message safely, saves single emails as .eml and exports the whole index to CSV.

Key Features

Streams multi-GB mailboxes in chunks, so a full Google Takeout export opens without loading into memory
Lists every message with sender, subject, date and Gmail labels from X-Gmail-Labels
Filters by sender, recipient, subject or label, and sorts newest, oldest or in file order
Renders HTML email in a sandboxed frame with scripts and tracking pixels blocked
Saves any message as an .eml file and downloads its attachments one by one
Exports the full message index to CSV with UTC dates, sizes and byte offsets

Use Cases

Read your old Gmail after leaving a job or closing a Google Workspace account, using the Takeout export
Find one invoice or contract in a 6 GB archive for a tax filing or a lawyer in Austin, TX
Review a mailbox produced for a legal hold or e-discovery request without installing a mail client
Check what is inside a Thunderbird folder file before migrating to Outlook or Apple Mail
Pull a spreadsheet of senders and dates into Excel to audit a shared support inbox

Supported Formats

Google Takeout Gmail export (.mbox)

mboxrd and mboxo (>From quoting is undone)

Thunderbird folder files with no extension (Inbox, Sent)

Apple Mail and Python mailbox exports

How do I open an MBOX file from Google Takeout?

Google Takeout delivers Gmail as a .zip or .tgz archive. Extract it, then open Takeout/Mail and pick the .mbox file inside, usually named All mail Including Spam and Trash.mbox. Drop that file on this page. Gmail writes each message's labels into an X-Gmail-Labels header, so you can filter by Inbox, Sent, Starred or any custom label just like in Gmail.

Is my email uploaded anywhere?

No. The mailbox is read from your disk in chunks by your browser and never sent to a server. HTML messages are shown in a sandboxed frame that cannot run scripts, and remote images stay blocked until you load them, so senders cannot tell that you opened an old message.
