What is an EML file and how do I open one?

An EML file is a single email saved in the text format defined by RFC 5322 and MIME: a block of headers such as From, To, Date and Subject, a blank line, then the body. HTML versions, inline images and attachments are packed into the body as MIME parts, usually base64 encoded. Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird all save messages this way, so any viewer that understands MIME can open one, including this page, with nothing to install.

Is it safe to open a suspicious email here?

The message never leaves your browser: it is parsed locally and nothing is uploaded. HTML is shown in a sandboxed frame that cannot run scripts or submit forms, a Content Security Policy blocks every network request, and remote images stay off until you load them, so tracking pixels cannot tell the sender you opened it. Attachments are saved only when you click download, and they are never opened.
