Why is a base64 data URI bigger than the original file?

Base64 encodes every 3 bytes of input as 4 ASCII characters, so the payload grows by about 33% before you count the data: header itself. This tool shows the exact overhead for your URI. Below roughly 1 to 2 KB that trade is usually worth it because you save an HTTP request, and above it a separate cached file normally wins.
