Cron expression

Five fields, or a shorthand such as @daily. Names like MON and JAN are accepted.

Date and time to test

Interpreted in your local time zone, the same way crond reads the server clock.

Field order

minute hour day-of-month month day-of-week

Day of week runs 0 to 6 starting Sunday, and 7 is also accepted for Sunday.

About Crontab Tester

A crontab tester answers one question: would this cron expression have fired at that exact minute? Paste a five field expression and a date and time, and the tool reports a match or no match plus a per-field breakdown showing which pattern accepted the value and which one rejected it. Use it to work out why a nightly backup on a us-east-1 box skipped a run instead of guessing.

Why does my cron job run on days I did not expect?

Almost always because both the day of month and the day of week field are set. When neither is an asterisk, cron runs the job when EITHER field matches rather than when both do, so 0 0 1 * 1 fires on the first of the month AND on every Monday. If you need both conditions to hold, leave one field as an asterisk and test the other in your script.
