Day-of-week runs 1 to 7 starting Sunday (1 = SUN), not 0 to 6 like Unix cron. One of the two day fields must be ?. The day fields also accept L (last), 15W (nearest weekday) and 3#2 (second Tuesday).

Why does AWS reject a cron expression that works in crontab?

AWS cron is not Unix cron. It needs six fields instead of five, because the last one is the year. Day-of-week counts 1 to 7 from Sunday, so a Unix 1-5 for Monday to Friday becomes 2-6 or MON-FRI. And AWS never lets you set day-of-month and day-of-week together: one of them must be a question mark. So the crontab line 0 9 * * 1-5 becomes cron(0 9 ? * MON-FRI *).
