Free desktop app for running local LLMs on your own hardware - OpenAI-compatible API server, 1,000+ models; $19M raised from Conviction and Google.

LM Studio is a free desktop application for Windows, macOS, and Linux that lets developers and researchers download and run open-source large language models entirely on their own hardware - no API keys, no cloud costs, and no data leaving the machine. It provides a GUI for model discovery and download from Hugging Face (GGUF and SafeTensors formats), a built-in chat interface, and a local OpenAI-compatible API server for connecting VS Code extensions, agents, and other tools. Launched in May 2023, LM Studio raised $19.32M in May 2025 from Conviction, Genius Ventures, Dylan Field (Figma CEO), and Google. Features include MCP client support, an iPhone app for on-device inference, Apple MLX support for Apple Silicon, and a headless CLI tool (`llmster`) for server deployments.

Key Features

  • Model discovery and one-click download from Hugging Face - supports GGUF and SafeTensors formats for 1,000+ models
  • Local OpenAI-compatible API server - any tool that accepts an OpenAI endpoint (VS Code extensions, agents, Cursor) works instantly
  • MCP (Model Context Protocol) client support for connecting local models to external data sources and tools
  • Apple MLX model support for optimized performance on Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)
  • iPhone app for on-device mobile inference entirely on the device with no server required
  • Desktop chat interface with conversation history, system prompt editing, and per-message parameter tuning
  • Headless CLI tool (`llmster`) for running LM Studio as a server on remote Linux machines or cloud VMs

Use Cases

  • Privacy-conscious developers who need LLM assistance for sensitive codebases and cannot send code to external API providers
  • Researchers experimenting with open-source models like Llama 4, Mistral, Qwen, and Phi without per-token API costs
  • Developers building and testing AI-powered applications locally before pointing them at a cloud API in production
  • Teams in air-gapped or regulated environments that need LLM capabilities with zero data egress to external services

Pros

  • Completely free for personal and business use with no usage limits on the core desktop app - no subscription required to run any open-source model
  • Local OpenAI-compatible API means any tool already built for ChatGPT's API works with local models in LM Studio with zero code changes
  • $19M raise from Google signals enterprise ambitions and long-term infrastructure investment - not a side project at risk of abandonment

Cons

  • Performance is bottlenecked by local hardware - running large models (70B+) requires a high-end GPU; consumer machines are limited to smaller models
  • Open-source model quality lags GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet on complex reasoning tasks, making some use cases impractical locally
  • Enterprise features (centralized management, SSO) require contacting sales - no self-serve enterprise option currently available
