Free model marketplace on GitHub for testing GPT-4o, Llama, Mistral, and Phi-3 via a playground UI and REST API - available to all GitHub users.

GitHub Models is a model testing and access platform launched in August 2024 that lets every GitHub user experiment with frontier AI models directly within the GitHub ecosystem. Developers can use the built-in playground to compare model responses side-by-side, tune system prompts, and benchmark latency before committing to an integration. Once ready for production, models are accessed through Azure AI Inference APIs with pay-per-token pricing. Available models include GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Llama 3.1 (8B, 70B, 405B), Mistral Large and Nemo, Phi-3 mini and medium, Cohere Command R+, and AI21 Jamba. The free rate limits are generous enough for prototyping and learning without any API costs.

Key Features

  • Playground UI for testing any available model with side-by-side comparison across multiple models
  • Access to GPT-4o, Llama 3.1, Mistral Large, Phi-3, Cohere Command R+, and AI21 Jamba
  • REST API access using the GitHub token developers already have - no new credentials required
  • Code generation in the playground that produces ready-to-run SDK snippets for Python, JavaScript, and curl
  • System prompt editor with persistence for iterating on prompts across sessions
  • Free rate limits sufficient for development and prototyping without any billing setup
  • Direct path to production deployment via Azure AI Inference with the same API contract

Use Cases

  • Developers evaluating which model best fits their use case before committing to an API provider
  • Students and learners experimenting with LLMs without needing to set up API accounts or enter payment info
  • Engineering teams prototyping AI features using existing GitHub credentials without new vendor relationships
  • Researchers benchmarking open-source models against commercial models on custom evaluation prompts

Pros

  • Zero additional signup required - every GitHub user already has access with their existing account
  • Multi-model comparison in one place eliminates the need to juggle multiple playgrounds and API keys
  • Smooth production path via Azure AI means prototyping code can transition to production without changes

Cons

  • Free tier rate limits are strict and throttle quickly during active development sessions
  • Model selection reflects Microsoft and GitHub partnerships - excludes Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini
  • Production deployment routes through Azure AI which adds Azure account complexity for non-Microsoft teams
